Becoming a Dental Assistant in Oregon
A dental assistant in Oregon may perform basic supportive dental procedures specified by the state dental practice act under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. There are no education or training requirements for this level of Dental Assisting (Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.)
However, in order to perform expanded job duties during procedures and treatment, Dental Assistants must earn additional certifications to work as what is called an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA). These certifications can be achieved through 1,000 hours of work experience in another state – like Washington or California – or through completion of certification exams.
For example, in order to take x-rays in Oregon, a separate license is required. The Pacific Northwest Dental Assisting School’s x-ray course will prepare you for the examinations required to earn this license. Other expanded areas of certification include:
- IV therapy
- Preventive care
- Anesthesia monitoring
