In Oregon, Dental Assistants may perform basic supportive dental procedures specified by the state dental practice act under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. There are no state-mandated education or training requirements for this level of Dental Assisting (Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.)
However, in order to perform dental radiography or certain expanded dental assistant job duties in Oregon, Dental Assistants must earn additional state-recognized certifications. Please consult the Oregon Board of Dentistry and the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Oregon state requirements for current Oregon certification pathways and examination requirements.

Yes! You’re more than welcome to complete your internship at the dental practice of your choice. However, keep in mind that it’s very difficult to find a Portland practice that will accept you as an intern as you will not yet have the x-ray license required for Oregon Dental Assistants.
